Not ah the old standbys lose in vitality as they gain in prestige. Often we have but to glimpse the name to know that the story which follows will be good. It is this knowledge which gives a writer advertising value, and which justifies the editor in demanding that the new writer shall create more vitally than the old. The work of the new writer must stand on its own merit. It must attract attention and make up in excellence for the guarantee gained by a well known name. In the meantime I am trying for my "first three." Then, oh then, I will turn my files and pigeonholes over to a secretary, and it's Europe for me! But I won't read what comes out under my name.
